November 2008
From the Desk of Jim McClain:
A recent tour through the new Tanglewood Park facility brought tears to my eyes… and I want to tell you why. My father-in-law lived in our home for the last 14 years of his life. Carolyn and I both worked during the week so, like many senior citizens, he battled loneliness and boredom. Many seniors allow this to turn into deep depression, but he was such a strong person that he persevered. I remember him going to Meijers, visiting with the cashiers, and wandering around in hopes of meeting a friendly face and starting a conversation. His life would have been so much better had there been a Tanglewood Park available! In addition, it would have provided tremendous relief for him while being the primary care giver for his wife who was afflicted with Alzheimer’s for many years. As I reflect, the programs and services at Tanglewood Park would have been a wonderful resource for my own mom and dad, too.
Today older adults (50 +) can sign up for exercise or dance classes, watercolor or drawing lessons and if you can imagine... ukulele, flute or Indian drumming instruction! They can find volunteer opportunities, join in a game of standup shuffle board or play a game of computerized Wii golf. There is a beautiful café that is open from 7 am-4 pm where they can meet old friends and build new relationships. What a blessing it is!
In addition to all the social and recreational activities, Tanglewood Park houses four agencies that specifically serve older adults and their families. It is a one-stop shop for information and services! If you have ever had to navigate the maze of services for elder care…you know how incredible it is to have a centralized resource center!
I had the opportunity to contribute early-on to the capital fund drive for this exciting project. I became so enthused about Tanglewood Park that early in November I sent a personal letter to all my friends and associates and invited them to tour the facility and consider a generous end of the year gift. I sincerely hope this endeavor results in increased awareness of this unique service center, increased involvement in its recreational/educational programs and additional financial support to conclude the fund drive! I’m glad to be part of the effort,
